You might be surprised to hear that I was a music video editor at one time. You see, I used to be the editor for The Rumpus, a great arts and entertainment journal, and it was there I learned how to get music videos up there. Music videos are a great way to get young people interested in music. And they’re a great way to make money. But what we’re seeing more and more is a lot of videos that are really boring and just trying to get people to look at the screen.
As you probably know, you tube video is one of the most popular distribution platforms for music videos. But what many people don’t know is that there are two forms of videos on you tube. You tube videos are mostly stills, and the ones that have music are called music videos. But music videos are only the tip of the iceberg.
In one of the latest music videos we’ve seen on YouTube, a guy takes $100 and goes to buy a “sexy” dress. He then goes to a strip club and takes his clothes off. When he tries to go to the bathroom, he thinks hes going to be shot. When he hears a shot ring out, he just stops and then turns around and makes out with the lady who gave him his $100.
The point of this video is that there is no such thing as music videos. There is only music, and the music is whatever you want it to be. I like that, because it gives people a good excuse to use whatever music they want. But it is a sad commentary on the whole culture of music videos. Music videos, a genre that is all about the music, make great content, but they can also have the added problem of being boring.
